Open Hands

There is no more important decision in your entire life than trusting Jesus Christ alone as your only way to heaven. It will determine where you spend all of eternity. Faith in Christ establishes your eternal relationship with God.

The Bible has both some Bad News for us and some Good News for us. Let’s look at the Bad News first.

You and I are sinners. The Bible says in Romans 3:23, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” We have missed God’s requirement of perfection. We have disobeyed His commands. If I asked you to throw a rock and hit a target that was five miles away, there is no way you could possibly do it. Just like that you and I cannot not possibly say or do anything to become perfect before God.

The second part of the bad news is that the penalty of sin is death. Romans 6:23a says, “For the wages of sin is death.” The wages we are paid for our work each week is what we have earned and justly deserve. God is saying that our sin has earned us death, which here means not just physical death, but rather eternal death (separation from God for eternity). Because God cannot allow any sin into His perfect heaven, you and I are on our way to hell where we will be separated from God for eternity. Many people hope that there is something they can do to earn their way to heaven, but God’s Word says that is impossible.

So, because you and I cannot do anything to gain eternal life, God offers us eternal life as a gift. This leads us to the “good news”.

The first part of the good news is that Jesus Christ died for you. Romans 5:8 says, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” God sent His only Son to die on the cross in our place. He took our sins upon Himself and paid the penalty for every one of your sins. Perhaps you have heard true stories of one person giving his life in order to safe another person from physical death. Jesus Christ died so that you and I can have eternal life as a free gift from Him. That is called His grace.

The second part of the good news is that you can be saved by faith. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” God is offering you the gift of eternal life if you are willing to receive it by believing in Jesus Christ as your only way to heaven. Salvation cannot be earned by good works. It is only available by God’s grace (a free gift) if we believe in Jesus Christ alone as our only way to heaven. When you sit down on a chair you put your full weight upon it and trust the strength of that chair to hold you up. Just like that, we must trust Jesus Christ and what He did for us on the cross, as our only way to heaven.

If you believe in Jesus Christ for eternal life the Bible promises that you are on your way to heaven. John 5:24 says, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” You have just come to understand what the Bible says about how to get to heaven and if you now believe that you are going to heaven only because Jesus Christ died for you, the Bible promises that you are going to heaven. Please memorize this verse and use it to remind yourself that you no longer need to worry about ending up in hell. God promises that you are going to heaven.
